Avalanche lily

Also Called: White avalanche lily
Scientific Name: Erythronium montanum

Seen on hike to McNeil Point 8/8/13

We saw big patches of this beautiful flower. They were high up near the melting snow.

The Avalanche lily is only found in the Northwest Cascades and Olympics mountains. A delight reserved for those who hike in the great Northwest. The corms of the Avalanche lily were a source of food for the indigenous Northwest tribes.

The Avalanche lily is closely related to the Glacier lily.
However, the Avalanche lily has white flowers with yellow centers. The Glacier lily has yellow flowers

The Avalanche lily has 6 curved, upsweeping tepals. Each flower is usually on top of a leafless, unbranched stem.

We saw large patches of this beautiful flower
