Parmesan is the name regularly used for the cheese actually known as Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Parmesan is a hard, granular cheese.

It is named after the producing areas in Emilia-Romagna) Italy.

In Italy Parmigiano-Reggiano is cooked but not pressed. My Parma was cooked & pressed.

Parma is a city in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Emilia-Romagna is famous for its prosciutto, cheese. Emilia-Romagna is also called Reggio Emilia.

Parmigiano is the Italian adjective that refers to the city Parma. Reggiano is the Italian adjective that refers to the region Reggio Emilia. The English name for the cheese Parmesan comes from the French name for it.
