A Hike Up Dog Mountain
Seven and a half miles - 3000 feet elevation
Thursday, 5/22/14


At the trail head we got a hint that this would not be an easy climb.

We saw the EMT's load an ambulance with a 30 year old who collapsed on the trail and had to be rescued.






The first part of the trail was shaded but steep.

The pictures do not really show the trail's steepness.





We arrive at the first lookout that is called puppy.
The views are spectacular.

Some of the group stopped here, but the best was yet to come.



After the first lookout point, there was a lot more climbing to get to the top.












The climb to the top after the first viewpoint provided some of the best views.



One person annoyed the rest of the group by stopping to take pictures of the flowers.












The hills were filled with flowers








The group finally reaches the top and stops for lunch.










The views from the top were awesome

Everyone was quite happy to see the cars on our return.

The mountains were filled with Balsamroot

Phantom Orchid
(Cephalanthera austiniae)

The Phantom Orchid is one of our rarer orchids.
It is unique in several ways.
It is the only North American species that is always white.
In the genus Cephalanthera the Phantom Orchid is the only species that is saprophytic (that is, living off decaying material in the soil) and lacking in color

Cephalanthera is primarily a European and Asian genus. The Phantom Orchis is the only Cephalanthera species in North America.

Starflower is a pretty little flower. It is a member of the Primrose family.

It is a perennial herb that grows from slender, creeping rhizomes.
