Hike 10/11/13
The Shellburg Falls Recreation Area

We arrive at the trailhead
Parking is limited, but there is room for all

Jeanine, our leader
circles up the hikers for a count-off
Jeanine doesn't want to lose anyone

After about a mile we arrive at lower Shellberg Falls

The sign points to the trail going to Upper Sheelburg Falls,

Our leader says that we are going to take the long way to the upper falls, so we move on up the road.

It is a good trail - the forest is wonderful

This hiker seems happy enough

We begin by following
the August Mt. Trail

There are some bridges, but they are nice bridges

After a bit of hiking we come to the Shellburg Creek Trail

We see some giant ant hills.

The ants are sleeping -- they have finished foraging for this year

The maples have changed color and the forest is a blaze of color.

My little camera does not really capture the wonderful colors

We arrive at our lunch spot, not too scenic, but functional

We then follow Shellberg Creek - going to the falls

There were some steep stairs getting to the falls.

(the person behind Joan absolutely did not want her picture taken -- so I hid her face --
who knows why she didn't want her picture taken -- everyone has secrets )

Walking behind the falls is interesting and beautiful

Here we look at the falls from behind the falls

Hiking away from the falls

We arrive at the lower falls --
this completes the loop
and a wonderful day of hiking

Driving Directions

a) Take I5 South toward Salem to Exit 253
b) At exit 253 take Hwy 22 East
c) Drive 22 miles to a flashing yellow light (Gene's Meat Market on the corner)
d) Turn left on Fern Ridge Rd.
(note Fern Ridge Rd, is 50 feet prior to the flashing light )
e) Drive 1.3 miles on Fern Ridge Rd. to the trailhead
