Hike to Hamilton Mt.
09/05/13
Seven and a half miles - 2000 feet elevation gain
The weather forecast was for rain and thunderstorms
Who would go an a hike on a day like this ??
Liz, our able leader explains that going up will be hard
She points out that there will be 23 switchbacks
Everyone prepares for rain -
Are we really going to try to climb to the top of that peak
The forecast is for rain -- are these people crazy or what
The hike begins with a pretty nice trail
The bridges on the trail are quite nice
We passed the
"Pool of Winds" waterfall
Our leader assures the troops that we are making good progress and it will not rain.
Everyone remembers that our leader said there were 23 switchbacks
Here we are at switchback 22 and it does not look like we are nearing the top
We encounter a number of snakes along the trail
Phyllis tells us they are harmless "Rubber Boas"
Even with the clouds the views are wonderful
It hasn't rained yet, but there are lots of clouds
Even with the dark clouds on the horizon
we could still enjoy the views
Finally after FORTY NINE switchbacks we reached the top
The idea that there were 23 switchbacks was just "leader Talk".
But the views were wonderful and it did not rain so everyone forgave whoever said there were only 23 switchbacks
We took a different trail back that offered some spectacular views
We still had to cross some bridges on the way down
Our reward --
Near the end of the trail we saw some beautiful "Chicken of the Woods" that said "Job Well Done" to the group
