It was too smoky on Thursday for a hike on Mt. Defiance

The group was small enough that selecting an alternate hike was easy
Especially with a leader as knowledgeable as Terry

The group choose to hike around Larch Mt.
Terry knew the trail.

Six miles circling the mountain
Then a quarter mile of steps up to Sherrard Point
It was a good hike.

Here is the hardy group --
less their photographer

There are lots of trails on Larch Mt.

Our leader knew where we should go at each junction.

It is always nice when the GPS verifies that you are going in the right direction

The other hikers where always happy when Terry made the correct decision about which way to go

One of the hikers who doesn't like heights and bridges didn't mind these bridges

After six miles with no snack stops or long breaks, the hikers where very happy to arrive at the picnic area
But after lunch we went to Sherrard Point

Here is what we faced after lunch

This group made it up to the point and back with a minimum of whining.

It was smoky and we couldn't see much, but Sherrad Point is an impressive spot.

There were a few flowers and other growing things

There was this remarkable log, with new trees growing out of its entire length

Pyrola aphylla

There was more coolwort than I have ever seen

The foxglove was at the end of its season

Rattlesnake plantain

why trees die
