Hericium abietis

Also called:
Bear's head or the Western coral hedgehog

found 10/12/15 on Larch Mt.
Hike with Debbie

(similar to Hericium erinaceus - a Lion's mane -
Hericium erinaceus grows on hardwood stumps
whereas Hericium Abietus grows on Doug Fir stumps)

Hericium abietis

Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane) is a lookalike spine fungus.
Hericium erinaceus grows on hardwood stumps
whereas Hericium Abietus grows on Doug Fir stumps)

Lions's mane can be distinguished by its more compact fruit body structure that
lacks multiple branches, in which the hanging spines all originate
from a single thick tubercle.

In Hericium coralloides,
the spines line the undersides of the branches,
unlike H. abietis, whose branches are arranged in clusters at the tip of branches.
[from wikipedia]

Hericium abietis produces a white spore print.
Spores are spherical or nearly so, smooth to slightly roughened
