False Chanterelle
Scientific Name: Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca

Found 9/14/13 off of the Wind River Highway









True Chanterelle do not have blade-like gills--
rather, they have rib-like folds running down the stem.
The false Chanterelle has true blade like gills.

The false chanterele also has a hallow stem, whereas the stipe of a true chanterelle is solid tru and tru.

There is also a color difference between a true chanterelle and a false chanterelle.

The False Chanterelle has a fine ‘downy’ surface texture (esp. when younger). The True Chanterelle has a more distinctive ‘irregular’ wavy and lobed shape all round the edge.

Fakse Chanterelle It has been described as edible (though not tasty) by some experts, but other authors describe it as poisonous.
