Russula

Possibly Russula pectinata or Russula foetans

Seen on hike along Salmon River 8/29/13 (hike 230)









Notable characteristics
  • There is no veil
  • The cap is slimy,
  • The cap edge has striations,
  • A rancid or bad smell
  • Stains brown when bruised
  • Spore print is white (see below)
  • Spores have warts (see below)
  • Spores have a large apiculus -i.e. stem (see below)


The "stem" on the spores is an enlarged apiculus, or attachment peg of the spore. Russulas are usually identified by the size of the appiculus, plus the height and pattern of the spines on the spores, more than color of the cap! (info thanks to Judy)
