Take a look at the treasure we found

The mushrooms shown below were picked in the Oregon Coast range on November 15, 2011

We found two ediable varieties

Hypomyces Lactifluorum (Lobster Mushroom) and
Hydnum Repandum (Hedgehog)

We also found the rare and endanged Albatrellus avellaneus

A friend found and gave us Sparassis crispa ( Cauliflower Mushroom) that Joan cooked.

Let me start with
the end product
This is a dish with
the three types of
mushrooms cooked and
ready to eat

This is the Hypomyces Lactifluorum
(Lobster Mushroom)
This is a somewhat strange mushroom

It first growns as a white Russulas brevipes.
Russulas brevipes is not edible.
The Hypomyces Lactifluorum mushroom
acutally grows in the tissue of the Russulas brevipes

The Hypomyces Lactifluorum is a delicious mushroom

This is the
Hydnum Repandum (Hedgehog)
Note the teeth on the bottom of the cap
This is an identifying feature of this
mushroom

Another picture of the Hydnum Repandum (Hedgehog)

Below are pictures of the very rare and endangered
Albatrellus avellaneus

Characteristics:

No veil
Stem is off center of cap
Decurrent: No edge between bottom of cap and stem
Edge of cap turns down
Cap not slimy
No dots or scabs on stem
Does not stain when cap or stem cut

Identifying this was quite a challenge
I spent an entire day working on the identification
-- the benefits of retirement --

Characteristics:

no teeth under side of cap
