Hike to and in Tyron Creek
4/28/15

We ecountered a fellow on this hike who has
a hobby that makes fishing look
like a very active sport.

He was an owl watcher.
We met him at 11:30 AM.
He had been at the same spot watching
an owl's nest since 7:30 AM.

A Barred Owl (Strix varia)
Also called a Hoot Owl"
We saw the mother owl,
but we did not see the babies.
We only watched for ten minutes.

Barred owls may be partly responsible for the recent decline of the northern spotted owl in Oregon.

Since the 1960s, barred owls have been expanding their range westward from the eastern US. When spotted owls and barred owls share the same environment, barred owls are generally more aggressive and out-compete spotted owls, leading to decreased populations. (adapted from Wikipedia)

We did encounter a vicious dog
In my best command voice I said "please sit"
and he didn't move.
He was the most gental and lovable
dog I have ever seen

(I'll bet they do not have dogs like
this in Texas.)

There were flowers along the trail.

This is a Vincia
also called Periwinkle

This plant is actguall known by three names:
Vinca,
Periwinkle (or Madagascar Periwinkle), and
Myrtle.

On the way to the park
we came across this
"Poem Box"
on the side of the road.
