Barlow Road
Part Two 7/25/13

The group assembles
and our leader shows a map of the Barlow trail

Here is the sign that points us to the Barlow Road

The Pioneers did not have this type of signs

It was hot, but almost all of the trail was through forest

This fellow was not a pioneer
But for some reason he was remembered on the trail

Most of the way we followed the White River

We had a better bridge to cross the river than what was available to the pioneers

There were not many flowers, but we did find a couple

Pine Drops
also called: Albany beechdrops, or giant bird's nest
Scientific Name
Pterospora andromedea

Pine Drops "lack chlorophyll.
Plants exist for most of their life as a mass of brittle, but fleshy, roots.

They live in a parasitic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi, in which plants derive all their carbon from their associated fungus, but the relationship is not yet well understood."(Wikipedia)

Silverweed or Silverweed Cinquefoil
Scientific Name:
Argentina anserina

This flower was on a long stem and even the slight breeze kept the flower moving, hence the poor picture

This species of plant has been cultivated as a food crop for its edible roots.

The usual wild forms, however, are impractical for this use, as they are small and are hard to clean. It may also become a problem weed in gardens
